As we celebrate this year Black History Month, join us on a captivating journey into the vibrant and imaginative world of artist Jo Aidoo, in her awe-inspiring exhibition “ Rebirth”. Jo brilliantly weaves together the threads of history, personal transformation, and African heritage through her unique artistic vision.

Inspired by a profound moment of self-discovery during her battle with Covid in 2022. Jo gazed upon her reflection, and saw more than just a face, she saw a patchwork of experience and resilience. It was in this moment of vulnerability and introspection that the concept for “Rebirth” was born.

At the heart of this exhibition are Jo’s stunning portraits, each meticulously crafted from juxtaposed fabrics that burst forth with colour and life. These portraits, all with an unmistakable African twist, pay homage to historical figures who ignited Jo’s own spirit.

Rebirth” is a testament to the power of art as a means of personal healing and cultural celebration. It invites you to explore the stories, struggles, and triumphs of remarkable individuals who have left vitality and vibrancy that captivates the soul.

As you wander through the exhibition, you will be transported to different times and places, guided by the skilful hands and boundless imagination of Jo “Rebirth” is an ode to the resilience of the human spirit and testament to the transformative power of creativity.

About The Artist

Born in Ghana and having moved to London over 40 years ago, Jo started stitching around the age of seven, using her skill as a form of expression. Having gone through and still experiencing many life challenges - including mental health issues - sewing soothes and relieves her anxious mind, allowing her to focus on her creations.

Jo says, “ I love working with African fabrics which are very bright and colourful. Colour is the language that speaks to me as an African woman. My Ghanaian heritage illustrates the vibrancy of African textiles and fabric traditions. What’s more, my artist and creative methods allow me to examine several themes including my family, friends, people of power and more recently landscapes, political and social related images and full body representations. It is an honour and privilege as an African woman to present my work as part of Black History Month.”
